Terror and piracy
The international fight against terror and piracy
The Danish shipowners' Association support the fight against terror and piracy by drawing attention to the need for an appropriate balance between the necessary measures and the costs of these.
The ISPS Code of 2004 particularly focuses on the efforts in the transport chains and thereby also the containerships. Here, the EU regulations are in line with the American model for risk assessment, which stipulates that information and screenings of the cargo must take place 24 hours prior to loading in a foreign port.
The EU legislation is not entirely the same as the American legislation, and the shipowners warn about practices which will distort the competition between shipping agents and shipping lines.
Combating piracy
Efforts against the increasing piracy are also an international task, where the Danish shipowners believe that all authorities must work together - including the military – to ensure the safe operation of the shipping industry. Denmark’s presence in the Gulf of Aden is of vital importance. In addition, the Danish Shipowners’ Association, together with authorities such as the Danish Maritime Authority, the Danish Foreign Ministry, the Danish Defence Ministry and PET (Danish Security and Intelligence Service), offer advice for shipowners, and private security enterprises on crisis control, training and other initiatives to prevent of pirate attacks.
